a new point of view

If we're being honest, we all know that we generally orient our living rooms around our televisions, because after all, everyone wants a good view of the TV.  However, when you're not watching it, you don't want the TV to be the only thing in the room you notice.  So how do we address this problem?  Read on for some clever ways:

1. Make the wall that the TV is on the focal point.  In the images below, you see different colors, textures, and patterns used on the wall behind.  The TV helps to balance this wall, pulling everything together (just try to imagine what it would look like without the TV in these images....empty right?).

2.  Mount the TV above a fireplace.  When you do this, the focal point of the room is the fireplace, yet everything is still arranged in a way for optimal viewing of the TV.

I just love the clean lines in this image where both the TV and fireplace are framed out in the same material.

3.  Frame out your TV.  By adding a frame around it, you are adding visual interest to the TV.  The images above also show the TV's being framed out.

This frame is super easy to make with some crown moulding.  For the full tutorial, click here.

4. Cover it with art.  This is absolutely my favorite fix.  Why stare at a empty black box when you're TV is off when you can stare at a beautiful picture instead?  There are some companies that make special devices that actually roll out the artwork to cover your TV when you're not using it.  Otherwise, you can hand craft your own device allowing artwork to slide over your TV.

5. Hide it behind a mirror.  I once was on the Parade of Homes and in one of the master bathrooms, they had placed a TV behind the large vanity mirror.  I thought it was the neatest thing ever.  So why not use this technique in your living room?  Now, you should note that you need to use a special kind of mirror for this, so you can't just hang up any old mirror you find.  But still, what a unique idea!

So, what do you think?  Have any of your tried any of these methods?  If so, how did they turn out?  I'd love to hear back from you...otherwise I'll see you all back on Wednesday!
